We are a multi-disciplinary independent private practice established in 1978.
Our building surveyors, civil & structural engineers and architects operate from 18 regional offices.

On 19 April 2022 Gateley Smithers Purslow was acquired by legal and professional services group, Gateley. Since then the business has traded under the new name of Gateley Smithers Purslow. We share the same client first ethos and commitment to service excellence as Gateley and the shareholders and directors are convinced that joining Gateley will enhance our client offering and provide the framework for our ambitious growth plans. History

The practice was established in 1978 when Norman Smithers and Graham Purslow opened an office in Oakham, Rutland providing civil and structural engineering services to UK and overseas clients.

Throughout the 1980s it earned a reputation as subsidence experts which led to contracts from major insurers and loss adjusters and the firm began to diversify by employing building surveyors. In 1999 Gateley Smithers Purslow was selected to be one of eight regional firms providing subsidence services to Royal and Sun Alliance and this gradually led to work for insurer clients nationwide.

From this base the firm has been able to secure general perils work for insurers covering the likes of fires, floods and also liability claims. We are now seen as one of the ‘go to’ practices in the UK that can provide independent professional expertise on challenging building losses and complicated liability matters. We service projects from regional offices throughout the UK. We have stayed true to our roots and still provide traditional engineering design to clients, but also building surveying, cost consultancy and architectural and planning services.

In Oct 2019 Gateley Smithers Purslow acquired northern based practice Byrom Clark Roberts increasing our national presence and adding further services and skills to our firm.

Due to demand for cost consultancy, in summer 2020, we established a working partnership with Leicestershire Quantity Surveying Practice, RJA with them working to our systems and procedures.

In Dec 2020 we completed the acquisition of Ainsley Stokes, a Chartered Building Surveying practice in Nottingham adding further expert witness experience, party wall and commercial surveying to our skillset.

We truly believe we can provide expertise to clients through the whole UK on virtually any property, construction and insurance matter.
